A cephalometric x-ray, also known as CEPH x-ray, allows the dentist to take a close look at the jaw bone, teeth and soft tissues of their patients. It provides them with a radiographic image of the side of the face. It is an extra oral way of getting the radiographic image, which means that the patient is not required to place a film inside their mouth. This makes it suitable for people who have sensitive gag reflexes.

How it Works?

Usually, a panoramic X-ray machine is used to take cephalometric x-rays. It has a cephalometric film holder installed on its mechanical arm. The patient is asked to stand at the centre of the machine. Their head is secured at a particular spot. A technician is there to guide them in this regard. Once they are firm on their position, the arm of the x-ray unit moves in a side-to-side sweeping motion and captures the images of the side of the face. These images can be magnified up to 30% for enhanced clarity.
