The surgeon recommends the patient to undergo a proper physical examination that includes x-rays to identify the cause and the site of fracture. This also helps them to know if the patient has suffered other injuries apart from mandible fracture.
Depending on the method they have selected, open or closed reduction, surgery is performed for the treatment of the patient. The former treatment option requires the site to be exposed with the help of a surgery. On the other hand, the latter involves intermaxillary fixation. The jaws, in this method, are splinted together in their original position.
In some cases, the surgeon may also use wires, metal braces or screws for the purpose of stabilising the jaw joints. This step aids the healing of the jawbone.
For some patients, physical therapy can be recommended by the surgeon. It helps to rebuild the strength of joints and jaw muscles.
