First of all, the dentist takes an X-ray to see the shape of the root canals and determine the extent of infection to the surrounding bone.
Local anaesthesia is used to numb the area around the tooth to prevent pain. A rubber dam, a sheet of rubbers, is placed around the tooth to prevent the build-up of saliva.
Next, the dentist drills an access hole in the tooth via special tools. The damaged nerve and pulp tissue are removed using special tools.
After removal of infected material, the dentist seals the tooth or puts it in a temporary filling to prevent the root canal pain until you get your customised crown. A rubber compound is placed into the root canal from where the decayed material was taken out. The access hole is filled.
Your dentist shall either use a crown, filling or some other method to relieve pain. Sometimes the tooth is left open for proper drainage. In some cases, a temporary filling is placed to protect the area as infected material drains.
