What to Expect After Wisdom Tooth Extraction
After extraction, a blood clot forms in the socket and needs to be protected — especially in the first 24 hours. Dislodging it can lead to dry socket, a painful but preventable complication.
First 24 hours Avoid forceful rinsing, spitting, or using a straw. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling, but stop after 24 hours. You can gently resume brushing that evening, taking care near the surgical site.
First few days Stick to soft, cold or room-temperature foods — mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, yogurt, pasta. Chew on the opposite side. Avoid smoking for at least 5 days, strenuous exercise, and mixing alcohol with any prescribed medications.
Most patients heal comfortably and can resume normal activities within a couple of days. Our Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon will provide personalised aftercare instructions and is available if you have any concerns.
