      TMJ Disorder Treatments

      Pain-free and effective treatment.

The temporomandibular joint or TMJ is a hinge-like joint that connects your jawbone to your skull on both sides of your face. It facilitates essential movements such as speaking, chewing, and yawning. This intricate joint consists of muscles, bones, nerves, and a cushioning cartilage disc for smooth operation.

However, when problems arise within this complex system, it can lead to a group of conditions collectively known as temporomandibular disorders (TMD). TMD can cause pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and associated muscles, often stemming from various factors such as injury, arthritis, teeth grinding, or everyday wear and tear.

Common Signs and Symptoms of TMJ Disorders

Pain or tenderness in the jaw joint

This can be felt on one or both sides of your face, especially when you chew, talk, or open your mouth wide.

Aching pain in and around your ear

The pain may radiate to your ear, making it feel like an earache.

Difficulty chewing or pain while chewing

You may experience discomfort or pain when biting or chewing food.

      Aching facial pain

This pain can be generalized or localized to specific areas of your face.

      Locking of the joint

Your jaw may get "stuck" or "locked" in the open or closed position, making it difficult to move.

Clicking or popping sounds when you open your mouth or chew

This can be a sign of joint dysfunction if accompanied by pain or limited movement.

      Headaches and migraines

TMD can trigger headaches and migraines due to muscle tension and jaw misalignment.

      Neck and shoulder pain

The pain can radiate from the jaw to the neck and shoulders, causing stiffness and discomfort.

      Diagnosis & Non-Surgical Therapy

While surgery may be necessary in extreme TMD cases, most cases can be managed effectively with non-surgical splint therapy. At SameDay Dental Clinic, our Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons will thoroughly assess your condition, diagnose the root cause, and create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs.

This plan may include various non-surgical therapies, such as occlusal splint therapy, over-the-counter pain medication, physical therapy, and lifestyle modifications, to alleviate your symptoms and restore your jaw's function.

      Types of Splints

      Lucia Jig

This is a small, usually horseshoe-shaped diagnostic device made of acrylic or similar material, designed to fit over the front teeth, creating a platform for the lower jaw to rest upon while discluding the posterior teeth. This separation of the back teeth helps to relax the jaw muscles and "deprogram" habitual bite patterns, allowing the jaw to settle into its most natural and stable position.

      Permissive Splints

These removable splints are designed to guide the jaw muscles into a relaxed position, allowing them to rest and recover. By reducing muscle tension and promoting proper jaw alignment, permissive splints can alleviate pain and discomfort associated with TMD. These splints are typically worn for six months, more than 18 hours a day, and removed only during meals.

      Frequently Asked Questions

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the hinge joint that connects your jawbone to your skull on either side of your face. When problems develop in this joint or the surrounding muscles, the resulting conditions are collectively known as temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Common causes include jaw injury, arthritis, teeth grinding (bruxism), and general wear and tear on the joint over time.

TMD can present in a number of ways, which is one reason it often goes undiagnosed for some time. Symptoms include jaw pain or tenderness, aching around the ear, difficulty or discomfort when chewing, a clicking or popping sound when opening the mouth, a jaw that locks open or closed, and pain that radiates to the face, neck, or shoulders. Headaches and migraines can also be a sign of TMD, caused by muscle tension and jaw misalignment.

No. Most cases can be managed effectively without surgery. At SameDay, the first approach is thorough diagnosis followed by non-surgical therapy — which may include occlusal splint therapy, pain management, physical therapy, and lifestyle modifications. Surgery is only considered in more complex cases where non-surgical treatment has not achieved adequate relief.

A splint is a removable dental device worn over the teeth to help reposition and stabilise the jaw. At SameDay, two types are used depending on the patient's needs. A Lucia Jig fits over the front teeth, separating the back teeth to relax the jaw muscles and deprogram habitual bite patterns — allowing the jaw to settle into its most natural and stable position. Permissive splints are the longer-term appliance, typically worn for around six months at more than 18 hours a day, to reduce muscle tension, promote proper jaw alignment, and relieve pain.

This depends on the severity of the condition and which treatment approach is used. Splint therapy typically runs for around six months, though this varies by patient. Some people notice an improvement in symptoms relatively quickly; others require a longer management period. Your treatment timeline will be discussed and tailored to you following a full assessment.

Possibly. TMD is frequently associated with headaches, migraines, and pain that feels like an earache — symptoms that many people don't immediately connect to their jaw. If you experience these alongside jaw clicking, facial pain, or difficulty chewing, it is worth having your TMJ assessed. A proper diagnosis is the first step to understanding whether your symptoms are TMD-related.

TMJ disorders at SameDay are managed by the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery team — Dr. Costa Nicolopoulos and Dr. Indraniil Roy — who carry out thorough assessments, identify the root cause of the condition, and design a personalised treatment plan for each patient.

For most patients, non-surgical therapy — including splint treatment, pain management, and lifestyle modifications — is effective in managing TMD. In cases where symptoms persist or the condition is more advanced, further intervention may be considered. SameDay also offers TMJ arthrocentesis, a minimally invasive procedure performed by our Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons to treat more complex joint problems. Your treatment plan will be reviewed and adjusted at follow-up appointments based on how you respond.
