Many patients ask, “Should I brush my new teeth on top of my implants immediately?” My answer is: it depends. Usually, we advise patients to take it easy during the first few days and to use extremely soft toothbrushes rather than hard ones.
The answer also depends on the type of surgery performed. Sometimes, we don’t even use stitches—we simply extract the tooth and place the implant. In these cases, since there are no sutures, patients can usually start brushing their teeth almost immediately.
Other times, more extensive surgery is required, and stitches are necessary. For these patients, it’s best to avoid brushing the area for the first few days. Gradually, they can start using a soft toothbrush and eventually return to their normal brushing routine as they did before getting their implants.
