      Wisdom Tooth Extraction: Post-Surgical Instructions

Congratulations on getting your wisdom teeth out! Now comes the healing phase, and following your surgeon’s instructions is crucial for a smooth recovery.

After extraction, a blood clot forms in the remaining socket and is in its most vulnerable, liquid state during the first 24 hours. This clot is critical for proper healing, acting as a natural scaffold for new tissue growth. A healthy blood clot reduces the risk of “dry socket”, which is a painful condition caused by clot dislodgement.

For improved healing and to prevent post-operative inflammation and infection, please follow the instructions below.

      For the first 24 hours:

      For the first few days

While we do advise our patients to rest for a couple of days following oral surgery procedures, it is safe to fly or travel after a few days. At SameDay, we use resorbable sutures which dissolve on their own around 3 weeks’ time. However, we prefer to remove the stitches to prevent food accumulation.

Wisdom teeth extraction is not as invasive as you might think especially if it is performed by an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon. In fact, a good number of extractions are done in under 15 minutes. We are trained in complex surgical extractions and use cutting-edge technology, ensuring a safe, pain-free, and comfortable experience for all our patients.
